The starting point for the Ferrata degli Alpini at Pietra di Bismantova is Piazzale Dante underlying the unique mountain formation above Castelnuovo ne Monti in the province of Reggio Emilia. To reach Castelnuovo ne Monti it is generally used the SS 63 of Passo del Cerreto that connects Reggio from Aulla from Reggio Emilia. Reached the center of the village follow the abundant indications for Pietra di Bismantova. Once in the square there is plenty of parking, although on hot summer weekends you are forced to park along the road due to the number of climbers and visitors coming here.
Directions for Google Maps available here.
From the parking place in Piazzale Dante you walk up a stair towards the Hut. In few minutes you will see on the right side a CAI sign indicating the direction of the via ferrata. Continue for 10 minutes along the impressive walls where it is easy to come across climbers who take advantage of the over 80 climbing routes present here. You enter a rocky ravine and along some grassy terraces you reach the first aided section (15' from the parking lot). Given the limited space near the start of the ferrata, we recommend wearing the harness in the yard or during the approach in the climbing areas.
The via ferrata develops in 2 different sections.
There are 3 return options.
The Ferrata degli Alpini with Pietra di Bismantova is a pleasant via ferrata that is ideal for walking in mid-season. Combined with the descent of the new West ferrata it allows in 3 hours to try out a beautiful and varied loop route from the point of view of the passages. It is advisable not to remove the helmet until the arrival at the Rifugio della Pietra since it is not uncommon to see stones falling. In June 2018 some maintenance works were completed in the first sector of the road near the downhill section.
