The Ferrata della Batteria Bassa ("Lower Battailon Ferrata") is a short ferrata that retraces some fortifications on the Italian-French border. There are several remains of military buildings where it is partly possible to enter with a torch. The via ferrata is not difficult and could also be enjoyed by beginners.
The starting point of the itinerary is usually the ticket office of the Tibetan bridge of Claviere, high Val di Susa, in the province of Turin. This ticket office is a well-indicated wooden hut in Claviere.
From the car park, go down towards the old state road 24 - now converted into a bicycle and pedestrian path - until you reach the first tunnel where torches are not needed (10 'from the parking lot).
At the end of the tunnel the climb begins on easy inclined rocks until it reaches a horizontal ledge. In this section there is a gallery with remnants of former military fortifications where it is possible to enter with a torch. Continue on a horizontal traverse to a very climbing vertical section with which we end the first section of the Low Battery Ferrata.
Follow a path that leads to the second stretch. We are on a fairly leaning wall where we climb up to the last vertical wall between rocks and rocky outcrops. The ferrata ends on old military buildings (1h from the start).
From the fortifications, follow the forest road that leads back to the old state road and then to the car park (40 'from the end of the ferrata - a total of about 2 hours).
There is the possibility to rent the equipment for the via ferrata at the Tibetan bridge ticket office (for directions here).
From 2018 the route was completed in order to climb completely the Mount Chaberton. Keeping this route in the first phase, you continue going up a first aided route that leads to the High Batailoon building, then exit the forest and walk for about an hour along a stretch of trail in the Petit Vallon until you reach the Via della Cresta Mario Perona (Ridge Route) which has now been aided with a steel rope and we reach Mount Chaberton peak (above 3000 m). This route is long and with a considerable gap.
