The Ferrata Sass del Tavarac is a difficult ferrata that extends over Erba, Como. The ferrata is traditional, without brackets supporting the climb and aimed at experienced hikers with good training and strength of arms. In almost all points the rock offers good climbing and, despite the low altitude, it will be appreciated even by demanding climbers.
The starting point of the itinerary is the village of Crevenna, in the municipality of Erba, province of Como. Once in Crevenna you must reach the Hermitage of San Salvatore with the peculiarity of being at the end of a private road and therefore that should not be traveled. If you decide to walk it, and therefore save 30 minutes of walking, the risk is to be fined. Alternatively, you can partially climb via San Giorgio up to a widening on the right side, park and continue along the uphill road between hairpin bends or following the path towards the hermitage.
Directions for Google Maps available here.
From the hermitage follow the trail markers indicating the Ferrata Sass del Tavarac and the nearby cliff. The path continues along the wood with red signs. You arrive near the cliff and look for the start on the via ferrata to your right (30 'from the hermitage - 1h from the clearing in via San Giorgio).
The via ferrata could be divided into three sections with decreasing difficulties:
For the descent there are two alternatives:
The Ferrata Sass del Tavarac is a short via ferrata, however it is challenging and technically difficult. There are metal equipment reduced to a minimum, even if in good condition, and this favors climbing enthusiasts. The first section of the via ferrata is very selective and you will find an advantage when using climbing techniques. Climbing shoes could be useful along the way.
The Ferrata Sass del Tavarac extends in a very rich area of via ferratas. If you wanted to stay on a similar difficulty level you could opt for the Ferrata 30° OSA al Corno Rat, the Ferrata del Venticinquennale at the Western Horn, the Ferrata the Corno Medale and the Ferrata Contessi at Monte Due Mani.
